Hollywood star Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her role in the beloved Princess Diaries franchise, with a third installment now officially in the works. According to Variety, development on Princess Diaries 3 is moving quickly, with director Adele Lim, best known for her work on Crazy Rich Asians, joining the project.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m thrilled to be part of bringing the third installment of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim expressed in a statement. “We’re excited to celebrate the core themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences around the globe.”
The movie will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who also worked on the original films starring Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis—a relatable teen who unexpectedly finds herself the queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia—and Julie Andrews as her elegant grandmother.
Hathaway, along with starring, will also serve as a producer under her banner, Somewhere Pictures. Lim’s producing partner, Naia Cucukov, will executive produce alongside Melissa Stack.
The third Princess Diaries film has been in development since 2022. Last year, Hathaway hinted at its progress during an interview with V Magazine, stating, “We’re in a good place… There’s nothing to announce yet, but we’re in a good place.”
Scripted by Flora Greeson, the plot is still under wraps, but it is expected to continue the storyline from the original 2001 movie and its 2004 sequel, Royal Engagement. Unlike a reboot, the new film will build on the legacy of the earlier installments.
Lim’s previous work, Crazy Rich Asians, was a massive hit, earning $174 million at the domestic box office on a $30 million budget. The film received widespread recognition, including nominations for Best Picture at the Golden Globes and Producers Guild Awards, and it won the Critics’ Choice Award.
